Plant the Seed, Grow the Dream

WHEN DO I PLANT?!

How to I know that frost won't kill it off before it starts?  How late is too late to start?  Is it better to do starter plants or can I still plant seeds if I'm getting a late start?  And what the fark is a zone?!

Well, lets start with zones.  THIS website is a very handy tool.  But don't get too hung up on zones.  You can plant a little earlier than it recommends if you're planting something hardy, like root veggies, or if you are willing to cover your plants to protect them from frost.  And if your plants do get frostbite, one time isn't likely to kill them off, unless they were just planted.  A little TLC (water, sun, weeding & time) will help an injured plant come back from it's near death experience.

Starter plants are the plants you see at the garden centers.  These are usually started in a hot house or green house, well before the growing season starts.  I like to buy my tomatoes this way.  Also, my cucumbers, squash, cabbage & some broccoli.  Why?  Because I'm impatient and live with a shorter growing season.  And because it irks my husband, who wants to start everything ourselves, but he doesn't start until it's time to actually plant outside.  Again, I have a slight lack of patience.

However, whenever you plant your seeds and starter plants, just be sure to shower them with love and the things plants like and desire.  And sing to them.  My garden loves Red River Valley and the Little Birdie Song.  Cross my heart.
